Not only OpenAI but also other companies or people now use the GPT technology for their own businesses. Such entities started to file trademark applications for marks containing “GPT” to protect the names of their goods or services. Mr. Tomohiro Gyoda, a patent and trademark attorney well experienced in trademark matters especially in the field of information technology, would like to explain how the Japanese Patent Office examines trademark applications for marks containing “GPT” filed by entities other than OpenAI.
In this webinar, we will not mention any specific applications or registrations. We will only explain tendencies of examination, general trademark practice, and statistics without disclosing information of specific applications or registrations. In addition, we will not mention applications obviously filed in bad faith (e.g. “ChatGPT” filed by a company that is not related to OpenAI).
