A Japanese design right protects not only the registered design but also designs similar to the registered design. Thus, if an applicant applies for similar designs, the applications will be rejected due to double patenting. The “Related Design System” in Japan permits similar designs to be registered as an exception of double patenting, provided certain requirements are met. It functions as an effective legal tool for securing protection of design variations.
Ms. Yuka Ogawa, a patent attorney specializing in design patents, will explain an overview of the Related Design System, including cons and pros of the system. This webinar would help you appropriately develop design protection strategies for design variations.
