A Japanese design application may contain only one design. If an application has more than one design, the application will be rejected.

A GUI design in which claimed parts are separate or an animated GUI design will be considered to be multiple designs if the design does not meet the unity requirements. If the JPO rejects an application due to lack of unity, it is sometimes impossible to overcome the rejection by arguing that the design is one design or amending the drawings, and it is necessary to divide the application. In order to avoid this problem, it is recommended that one have a thorough understanding of the unity requirements for GUI designs and to prepare drawings of a priority application in accordance with the unity requirements.

This webinar explains the unity requirements for GUI designs and appropriate drawings to be filed in Japan.
