The Japanese patent prosecution practice contains several unique systems/rules which needs specific attention. “Exception to Lack of Novelty of Invention” (Article 30 of Japan Patent Act) is one of them. There are similar systems in other jurisdictions, however, they have some differences in the details and it is necessary to understand how to effectively use the system.
